How to build your capsule wardrobe:
1. See what you have
Pull everything out of your closet, and take stock of what you have including your accessories.
2. Sort it all out
Understand what works for you in terms of shapes and colours and use this as a basis for your wardrobe rather than simply what you like, for example, if you have broad shoulders, then go for V neck as it gives a slim look or if you have an apple shape, choose A line or Flowy skirts.
1.What you want to wear (Love)
2.Clothes that don’t fit you (Donate)
3.Poorly Conditioned clothes (Trash)
3. Choose your favourites: The content of your capsule wardrobe will vary depending on your style. But importantly, you want to have a balance of tops, bottoms, layers and accessories.
Start by choosing a colour scheme: Start with a base colour that will go with everything like black, white, brown, grey or navy. Items such as trousers and handbags should be bought in shades of these colours so that they can be put with anything else in the wardrobe. After choosing the base colours, choose one or two accent colours, which are brighter than the base colours, and co-ordinate with each other.
Once a colour scheme is established, all the items in a wardrobe should be interchangeable, as the colour of the pieces would end up complementing each other. Now just make a list of 30 to 40 items by category. If you have more clothes after choosing, split them into 2 parts. One should fit in the capsule wardrobe and the other should fit in a box, pack it and hide it for a while.
4. Think before you add to cart: When buying new items, always make sure they are of high quality and made to last. Look out for products that are made from recycled fibres, organic pieces of cotton and quality materials.
5. Question yourself : Does it help the environment? A better motivation than any fashion advantage is the realisation that the more we buy, the more we trash. Owning a capsule wardrobe contributes to a lifestyle of increased consciousness, choosing to buy and own less. Focus on what you need, rather than what you want. Less shopping, less consumption, less waste.
Donate clothes that don’t fit to a charitable group, check out (https://www.thebetterindia.com). Reach out to them and give away stuff you don’t use anymore.
Reclaim lost space in your over-stuffed closet. Knowing that all your clothes work together and that everything fits well allows you to grab and go. Not only is it a great move for the environment but you will feel clutter free in your daily life.
