FAST FASHION
Most of us are on the road to Fast Fashion and not even aware of it. Let us first understand what is Fast Fashion and its effect on the environment.
What is Fast Fashion?
Fast Fashion means production of recent fashion trends seen on the runway at a low cost. Fast Fashion is not only about quickly moving from runway to store to the consumer, but also as quickly to the garbage. Fast fashion retailers need to keep up with demands for these styles so they often cut costs and in most cases that increases their carbon footprint.
Fast fashion items cannot be worn more than 5 times usually because of the low quality fabrics that are used. Fast fashion mostly consists of POLYESTER fabrics due to its its low-cost, versatility, and wrinkle-free properties. Polyester is a synthetic petroleum-based fibre, which makes it a carbon-intensive, non-renewable resource. Most importantly in fast fashion, manufacturing happens where labour is the cheapest and working conditions are not always a priority.
IMPACT OF FAST FASHION:
The pressure to reduce costs and speed up production time means use of cheap, toxic textile dyes – did u know that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter of clean water globally after agriculture? Polyester is derived from fossil fuels and its microfibres are increasing the level of plastic in our oceans when it’s put through a wash.
We are at a crossroad and we need to make better fashion and lifestyle choices. Are we going to be a follower of trends or do we dare to be different making choices that will not always be popular?
